Dear Prof Schreiner,
My name is tom_xx_hu. Representing a few "virtual ids" of an online community of Unix professionals in China), I am contacting you for your permission of translating your document "Object-oriented Programming with Ansi-C" from English to Chinese. Some of us have read the document and found it invaluable in understanding the concept of object-oriented, a fundamental concept that is not necessarily attached to C++ or Java.
If there is no copyright issue and no other concern from you, we plan to translate the document from English to (simplified) Chinese. We will make the Chinese version freely downloadable within the online community (just for reference not implying legal responsibility, the online community is at http://www.chinaunix.net ). We have no plan to publish (other than the above mentioned distribution) the Chinese translation at the time of writing. We have no commercial intention nor plan in the initiative of translating this document.
You may have noticed that I use the word "document" rather than "book" because I did not find copyright page in this English translation. However, we do respect your "ownership" and appreciate your (potential) permission. But, otherwise, kindly please let me know should you have any copyright/copyleft concern on our initiative, or you need further details of our plan.

I'll ask -- it's not completely clear whose permission is needed because
there is a German edition as well.

我意两种可能都有，翻译则还可正常进行。
2007年10月24日： 作者回复同意翻译并在网上公开下载。但作者保留版权。作者回复原文（电子邮件）如下：
You are welcome to translate "Object-oriented Programming with Ansi- C" from English to simplified Chinese and post a document to be freely available over the web.
You should include that I (Axel T. Schreiner, RIT, Rochester NY 14623 USA) hold all copyrights [originally, Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich, Germany, published a German edition as a book and had all copyrights but the English one; the book is out of print and they returned the copyright to me; I had translated my original German manuscript to English for publication by Addison-Wesley who later renigged on their contract with me.]
Please, let me know when and where a Chinese version is available.

Dear Prof. Schreiner,
I and my team are very grateful to your kindly permitting us to translate the book from English edition to Chinese. We will quote your copyright statement with Chinese translation in the Chinese manuscript.
There is a wiki space for the ongoing translation activity: http://wiki.chinaunix.net/index.php/OOC . Feel free to check it yourself or to have someone of Chinese nearby you (I'm pretty sure there are in Rochester) to walk you through the wiki. Of course, I would be happy to update you any time you need.
We just started the translation and have done most for Preface, Ch 2 and 3. Currently we have around 10 volunteers working on it. I am hoping to have a "beta" version before Christmas.
