每个上传的文件都有一个属于自己的图像描述页。包括图像、声音等。
在维基百科上的人和图像都有一个图像描述页，你可以点击一个图像进入这个页面。声音等其他文件类型同样可以在文章中使用，并显示为一个链接。
如果要链接到一个图像描述页可以使用[[:Image:a_sound.ogg]] 或[[:Image:an_image.jpg]]。在Image前的冒号是必需的，这样可以防止在文章中显示图像。而且如果是声音文件的话，自动播放声音是不可能的。
图像描述页有以下几部分组成：
- 图像本身
- 图像或声音的描述
- 图像历史。参看页面历史
- 图像链接
描述部分同样和其他页面一样，有自己的修订历史。

图像描述页是做什么用的
在图像描述页上你可以添加文字，你应该添加以下这些全部的信息，当然如果你对某些情况不了解，也可以不放。
注意：这些信息一般来说不应该和图像一起在文章中使用，也不应该将文字制作到图像中。
第一次上传文件时，描述部分会自动将摘要中的文字放上去。
图像的来源
参看wikipedia:表明出处例如“照片摄于2003年”，“来自xx网站”，“扫描自1911年的百科全书”等，也可以包含图像的作者等其他信息。
如果你自己创建了一幅图像，并且有一幅高质量的原始文件，你可以将源文件上传，提供给其他语言的维基百科使用或修改。你可以在图像描述页给出一个链接，并在wikipedia:图像源文件上给出链接。如果源文件太大，你可以将它压缩后上传。
版权状况
参看wikipedia:版权信息和wikipedia:图像使用守则给出明确的版权状况，可以让其他人重新使用，就像重新使用我们的文字一样。而且这样可以让其他的参与者编辑图像时更有信心，以免后来发现这个图像有版权或者与GFDL协议不兼容而造成不必要的麻烦。
以下的版权状况是被允许的：
- 公共领域：版权过期
- 公共领域：放弃版权
- 自由版权：GFDL
- 授权在GFDL下使用，这需要您提供授权证明
您也可能还会看到一下这些类似的版权。这些图像很多可能使用上有问题，因为他们的版权协议可能和GFDL不兼容：
- 有版权的图像：基于合理使用原则
- 有版权的图像：作者授权允许只能在维基百科上使用，但是不能将它们用于其它地方。
- 版权状况未知：我相信这个图像是没有版权的，但是我无法检查。
如果可能的话，请尽量用GFDL或公共领域的图像代替合理使用的图像。
如果你不清除这幅图像的版权状况，但是非常需要使用它，请详细地说明图像的来源信息，其他人可以帮助你检查他的版权状况。如果是一幅照片或者扫描自艺术品、建筑、雕塑、插图、古书或其他很老的图像，请给出一些例如时间等有效的信息。
Fair use rationale
Not all inclusions of fair use material may violate the GFDL; if there is a significant reason to include the image and no permission can be obtained it may still be allowable under the GFDL — a justification may be necessary. If you are claiming "fair use" it will help later users under the GFDL to determine if the "fair use" is broad (for further encyclopedia use) or perhaps not even applicable to Wikipedia. It will help if the basis of the "fair use" is explained (briefly). See the Wikipedia article on fair use for an explanation of the topic.
This should be done in two places. Firstly, add the following hidden text in the article:

Secondly, add rationale text to the image description page, beyond the information mentioned above. This fair use rationale text can be in the following format (the following are just basic examples, you must write your own specific text, do not copy this text for that purpose):
- == Fair use for [[ARTICLE NAME]] ==
- The image picture-fair-use.jpg is being linked here; though the picture is originally copyright I (~~~~) feel it is covered by fair use because:
- #it is a low resolution copy of a CD album cover;
- #it does not limit the copyright owners rights to sell the CD album in any way;
- #copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the album artwork on another CD;
- # the image on the cover is significant because it was made by a famous artist, [[name]].
- == Fair use for [[ARTICLE NAME]] ==
- The image linked here is claimed to be used under fair use as:
- # it is a historically significant photo of a famous individual;
- # it is of much lower resolution than the original (copies made from it will be of very inferior quality)
- # the photo is only being used for informational purposes.
- # Its inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because it shows the subject of this article and how the event depicted was very historically significant to the general public. ~~~~
The above are only general examples; for what information to be included in this entry you can review the list of four factors in the fair use encyclopedia entry and use the Checklist for fair use a pdf document from Purdue University to draft your answers. The information should be as specific as possible, i.e. why you need to use the image as part of the article. Remember to put any information about the copyright owner on the image page after you upload the image and mark it "fair use." The rationale text should be mentioned in the actual article so that it is part of the article and anyone editing the article can see it but it is in the text not the talk page. It can also be mentioned on the talk page for a discussion with other Wikipedia contributors). Adding this information is no guarantee that the image will not be later removed, but it will demonstrate a rationale to others that you may have a valid justification for including "fair use" materials that can be used under the GFDL.
Remember there is no "general rule" about fair use, each "fair use" must be explained and a rationale must be established for that specific use (i.e. every page that uses the image will have a distinct rationale for using the image on that page even though fair use is claimed on the image page).
Description of the image
Eg: "Image of a goldfish in a small tank". This should not be alternate text (see Alternative text for images), but rather a description. This is useful for users who do not have direct access to the image, and is a temporary substitute for a proper longdesc tag.
You could also include the proportions of the image, in pixels.
Other versions
If other versions (especially a larger version) of the same image exists, link to them.

Textfree versions are useful for our fellows using other language versions.

Images on image description pages
You can include images on image description pages. This is sometimes done when:
- making a photo montage
- embedding a larger version on the image description page
- embedding an image on its own image description page
meta:image pages includes a proposal to do the last one automatically. In the other two cases, some Wikipedians prefer other alternatives, such as good use of media: links.
